Liverpool continue to run rampant in England, Real Madrid have taken a solid hold of the top spot in Spain and transfer talk continues in Major League Soccer with less than a month left from the beginning of the 2020 season.

It looks like Alberth Elis and Mauro Manotas are here to stay after another transfer window has passed and both went unsold to European suitors. The Dynamo will need every bit of firepower they can get as they kick off the season on Feb. 29 against the LA Galaxy.
Offseason signing Marko Maric has arrived to the club and is expected to be the starting goalkeeper this season. You can learn more about the Croatian international in his interview on Soccer Matters with Glenn Davis.

The Houston Dash have traded away fan favorites Amber Brooks and Sofia Huerta, both starters in 2019, to add to the offseason turnover that saw Kealia Ohai also traded earlier this offseason. What looks like a fresh start for all involved is shaping up to be James Clarkson's most challenging season yet in only his second year in the women's game.

The Mexican star and the national team's all-time goalscorer has been the talk of the MLS offseason with his arrival to the Los Angeles Galaxy. The former Chivas of Guadalajara, Manchester United and Real Madrid striker is slated to be the highest-paid player in league history and has already had "double" the impact on season ticket sales than when Zlatan Ibrahimovic joined the Galaxy. LA open the season on the road in Houston on Feb. 29.
Hernandez might not be the last Mexican star joining the league this winter as David Beckham's Inter Miami CF is about to sign Monterrey's Rodolfo Pizarro, according to reports including The Athletic's Paul Tenorio. MLS also signed reigning Liga MX joint goalscorer Alan Pulido this offseason, joining Sporting Kansas City.

The Men's national teams of USA, Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica are heading to Houston this summer for the semifinals of the Concacaf Nations League, as first reported out of Honduras. The latest report locally (from Glenn Davis) is that the matches could be hosted in two separate venues on the same night - as opposed to the usual doubleheaders at NRG for Concacaf Gold Cup action.
The Dynamo's BBVA Stadium would host USA vs. Honduras while Mexico vs. Costa Rica would take place at the Texans' NRG Stadium. The final would be at the Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. Negotiations are still taking place but an official announcement could come as early as this coming week, according to reports.

Cal Raleigh approached the All-Star Home Run Derby like a day on the lawn. Dad was on the mound and baby brother was behind the plate.
Only this time, there were tens of thousands looking on at Truist Park and a $1 million prize.
âIt goes all the way back to him coming home and me forcing him to throw me a ball and hit it in the backyard or in the house or something probably shouldnât be doing,â a beaming Cal said, flanked by Todd and Todd Jr. after defeating Tampa Bayâs Junior Caminero 18-15 in the final round Monday night.
Todd Raleigh, former coach of Tennessee and Western Carolina, threw the pitches and Calâs 15-year-old brother, Todd Raleigh Jr., did the catching. A first-time All-Star at age 28, Cal became the first switch-hitter and first catcher to win the title. Heâs the second Mariners player to take the title after three-time winner Ken Griffey Jr., who was on the field, snapping photos.
âAnybody thatâs ever played baseball as a kid dreams of stuff like this,â Calâs dad said. âI dreamed of it. He dreamed of it. When youâre a parent, you look at it differently because you want your kids to be happy.â
Leading the major leagues with 38 home runs at the All-Star break, Cal almost didnât make it past the first round. The Marinersâ breakout slugger nicknamed Big Dumper and the Athleticsâ Brent Rooker each hit 17 homers, and Raleigh advanced on a tiebreaker for longest long ball: 470.61 feet to 470.53 â or 0.96 inches. At first, Cal wasnât aware whether there would be a swing-off.
âAn inch off, and Iâm not even in the final four, which is amazing,â Cal said. âSo I guess I got lucky there. One extra biscuit.â
Raleigh totaled 54 homers. He won his semifinal 19-13 over Pittsburghâs Oneil Cruz, whose 513-foot first-round drive over the right-center field seats was the longest of the night.

Calâs brother, nicknamed T, kept yelling encouragement to the brother he so admires.
âHis swag, the way he plays, the way he hustles,â T said.
Hitting second in the final round, the 22-year-old Caminero closed within three dingers â MLB counted one that a fan outfielder caught with an over-the-wall grab. Using a multicolored bat and down to his last out, Caminero took three pitches and hit a liner to left.
âI didnât think I was going to hit as many home runs or make it to the finals,â Caminero said through a translator.
Cal was just the second Derby switch-hitter after Baltimoreâs Adley Rutschman in 2023. His dad was a righty and wanted both his sons to hit from both sides.
âDid it from the first day, when he was in diapers, literally,â Todd Sr. said. âI would take that big ball and he had a big red bat. Iâd throw it slow and heâd hit it. Then Iâd say stay there, pick him up, turn him around, switch his hands and do it again. I was a catcher. I played a little bit, and I just knew what a premium it was. I didnât want either one of my boys to ever say, am I right-handed or left-handed?â
There was a downside.
âI donât recommend it if you have two kids, theyâre both switch hitters, if you want to save your arm, because thatâs a lot of throwing,â said dad, who had rotator cuff surgery.
Raleigh hit his first eight homers left-handed, took a timeout, then hit seven right-handed. Going back to lefty, he hit two more in the bonus round and stayed lefty for the rest of the night.
âWas grooving a little bit more lefty so we were like, since we have a chance to win, we might as well stick to the side thatâs working a little better,â Cal said.
Caminero beat Minnesotaâs Byron Buxton 8-7 in the other semifinal. Atlantaâs Matt Olson, Washingtonâs James Wood, the New York Yankeesâ Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Rooker were eliminated in the first round of the annual power show.
Cruzâs long drive was the hardest-hit at 118 mph.
Wood hit 16 homers, including one that landed on the roof of the Chop House behind the right-field wall. Olson, disappointing his hometown fans, did not go deep on his first nine swings and finished with 15, Chisholm hit just three homers, the fewest since the timer format started in 2015.fter it was all over, the Raleighs headed out. Stephanie, the boysâ mom and Todd Sr.'s wife, is surrounded by baseball.
After it was all over, the Raleighs headed out. Stephanie, the boysâ mom and Todd Sr.'s wife, is surrounded by baseball.
âWe kind of leave it in the cage. Weâve got a cage at home, a building,â Todd Sr. said. âOr we leave it in the car on the rides home. Thereâs probably been a few times where she says, yeah, thatâs enough.â
